Is Irish music always that fast?
Irish music is often lively and energetic, but speed isn’t everything. Some tunes sound far more expressive when played slowly, allowing the melody, ornamentation and emotion to breathe. The aim is not simply to play fast, but to play with feeling, character, style and musicality.
How do improve my techique?
Good technique comes from regular, focused practice. Work on posture, bow control, finger placement, rhythm and intonation, gradually building speed and accuracy. Practising slowly and correctly is often more effective than playing fast. With patience, consistency and guidance, your technique will naturally become stronger, smoother and more confident.

Is there a secret to learn a tune by ear?
There is no magic secret—just listening carefully and practising regularly. Start by humming or singing the melody, then break the tune into small phrases. Listen for patterns, rhythm and repeated sections. With patience, your ears will become more familiar with the music, making learning tunes by ear easier and more natural.
What is ornamentation?
Ornamentation adds character, expression and style to Irish music. Techniques such as cuts, rolls, slides and triplets decorate the melody and give tunes their distinctive sound. Learning when and how to use ornaments helps you play with greater fluency, feeling and authenticity.

Are you looking to learn play in group?
Cobh Trad
If you read the About section, you would probably know that I launched the Cobh Trad group back in 2019.
If you're an experienced musician and are desparate to bring down your instrument from the attic, dust it of and start playing again, the Cobh Trad group would be the ideal place to go to!
